The “Ceylona 2024” International Camp, held from 19th August 2024 to 23rd August 2024, was a prestigious event convened by Ibbagamuwa Central College, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. This event gathered Girl Guides and Guide Captains from various countries, focusing on exploring and discovering connections through diverse activities aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), STEM and traditional guiding practices.

Our delegation from the Girl Guides of SSVM Institutions© of Konghu Mandalam District Association, Tamil Nadu, proudly represented India at this international gathering. The Indian Contingent is represented by a team of 10 enthusiastic Girl Guides and 2 dedicated Guide Captains. The team showcased exemplary participation and spirit throughout the camp, contributing significantly to the activities and making meaningful connections with international counterparts.

The camp was a holistic experience that offered our Indian contingent a wide range of activities catering to physical, mental, and creative development. It served as a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and adventures,  fostering global understanding and friendship.

           The physical activities, including a challenging hike and an adventure zone with thrilling activities like rock climbing and zip lining,     tested the participants’ physical limits and promoted teamwork. Mental and emotional well-being sessions, such as “Free Being Me” and “Stop the Violence,” focused on self-acceptance, body positivity, and inner strength, emphasizing the importance of non-violence, empathy, and conflict resolution. Creative expression was encouraged through STEM programs, a craft village, and an exhibition showcasing innovative projects and achievements. Cultural immersion activities, including a cultural zone,                   cultural night, and

international night, provided a platform for participants to explore Sri Lankan culture and traditions, showcase Indian culture, and celebrate diversity. The trip also fostered unity and bonding among participants through a campfire, symbolizing unity, tradition, and the spirit of adventure.

he camp emphasized the importance of the United Nations’ SDGs. Our Guides participated in workshops and discussions that enhanced their understanding of global challenges and the role they can play in addressing these issues through

guiding principles and community involvement. The integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and  Mathematics  (STEAM)  in guiding activities was a key feature of the camp. Our team actively engaged in various STEAM projects, showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills.  The camp revisited traditional guiding practices, allowing our Guides to learn and practice time-honored techniques. This included campfire activities, knot-tying, and leadership exercises, which reinforced the core values of the Girl Guides.

Our team interacted with participants from various countries under the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) umbrella, sharing experiences and learning about guiding practices worldwide. Focused on the SDGs, this zone offered our Guides the opportunity to delve into specific goals such as climate action, gender equality, and quality education, fostering a deeper understanding of global sustainability. Featuring thrilling activities such as rope courses and obstacle challenges, the Adventure Zone tested the physical and mental endurance of our Guides, promoting resilience and teamwork.

A well-organized hike through the scenic landscapes of Kurunegala allowed our team to connect with nature and practice essential outdoor skills, including navigation and environmental stewardship. Water-based activities, including rafting and water safety exercises, were conducted, encouraging our Guides to build confidence and competence in aquatic environments. The Craft Zone provided a creative outlet where our Guides participated in arts and crafts, creating souvenirs and learning traditional Sri Lankan art forms. Exhibits showcasing various cultures, guiding traditions, and SDG-related projects were on display. Our Guides contributed by setting up a stall representing Indian culture and guiding history. This zone highlighted the rich cultural diversity present at the camp. Our team participated in cultural exchanges, performances, and discussions, enhancing their global cultural awareness.

The special highlights of the trip included the signing of camp passports, awarding of certificates and patches, and a visit to the Indian Embassy, which provided a crucial learning experience on diplomatic relations, cultural exchange, and national representation. The participation of the Konghu Mandalam District Association in the “Ceylona 2024” International Camp was a resounding success. Our Girl Guides and Guide Captains returned with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and a broader perspective on global citizenship, along with a wealth of knowledge, experience, and inspiration for their future endeavors within the guiding movement. The camp provided an invaluable platform for learning, networking, and personal growth, aligning perfectly with the theme “Explore – Discover – Connect.”
